Winthrop School Committee approves $40.15 million level-service budget for FY2026

WINTHROP — June 30, 2025 — Winthrop School Committee unanimously approves a $40.15 million operating budget for fiscal year 2026. The committee voted 5-0 at its June 30 meeting to adopt the finalized spending plan of $40,150,842, matching the appropriation set by the Winthrop Town Council and down slightly from an initial school department request of $40,515,522. The budget reflects $42,927,941 in total school costs offset by $2,777,099 in anticipated grants and outside revenue, including preschool tuition and circuit breaker funds; the superintendent cautioned that a shortfall in those grants would require the committee to reconvene and adjust expense lines. The district also filled its Pupil Personnel Services director role with Susan Gibbons, effective July 1, succeeding Jennifer O'Connell. Contract negotiations with seven unions are scheduled to begin July 9, with sessions running through late August.
