Winthrop School Committee unanimously appoints new pupil personnel services director

WINTHROP — June 9, 2025 — Winthrop School Committee votes 7-0 to hire Susan Gibbons as director of pupil personnel services. The committee appointed Gibbons, a lifelong Winthrop resident with more than 25 years of special education experience, to the post effective July 1, 2025, pending contract negotiations through the committee's negotiations subcommittee. Superintendent Dr. Brian Devine recommended her "without hesitation," citing her background as a teacher, coordinator, and team chair in Saugus, Marblehead, Winthrop, and most recently as coordinator of preschool services for Somerville Public Schools. The committee also approved payroll warrant SPW 25-23 for $1,141,406.95 and voted unanimously to enter executive session on collective bargaining strategy covering teachers, ESP workers, secretaries, and nurses — negotiations Devine said the district plans to continue through the summer. Winthrop graduated 148 seniors this year and distributed close to or more than $400,000 in scholarships at graduation.
