Select Board · Meeting of August 4, 2026

Winthrop Town Council voted 6-3 to raise Winthrop Taxi's local fare from $8 to $10, rejecting a competing $9 amendment. Owner Sean Cohn told the council insurance costs are rising 28 percent commercially this fall, calling it "the biggest increase in 25 years in my industry," and said daily fares per driver have fallen from about 30 a decade ago to between 8 and 15 now amid Uber and Lyft competition. Councilor Tassaneri opposed a $9 compromise amendment, asking colleagues, "Is that a gamble that this council is willing to take?" The amendment failed 2-6 before the full $10 increase passed 6-3, with Costigan, Romano and President Latieri opposed.

The council separately approved $1.1 million in borrowing for a third-year water meter and valve replacement program and heard Massport report 432 Winthrop properties are now potentially eligible for home sound insulation, with only eight treated to date.
