Board of Health · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Winthrop Board of Health launches wander-alert bracelet program, debates nip litter in heated session. Director of Public Health and Clinical Services Meredith Hurley told the board the Safety Net program has outfitted 18 radio-frequency bracelets, costing nearly $600 apiece, for residents prone to wandering due to dementia, autism or cognitive decline, with about 15 candidates already identified. Co-chairs Heidi Fantasia and Lisa Stefano approved August's minutes unanimously along with member Jean Maju.
The board's discussion of nip-bottle litter drew pushback from liquor retailers Aaron Williams of Sweat's Liquors and Elvis Tran of McGee's Liquors, who argued it is "a trash problem, not a nip problem." Officials also fielded complaints about uncollected dog waste and rodents linked to bird feeding on Reed Street and Beckhams Road.
