Winthrop Principals Report Academic Gains, Rising High-Needs Enrollment Across All Schools

WINTHROP — February 10, 2025 — Winthrop School Committee hears mid-year progress reports showing academic gains and rising high-needs enrollment across all four schools. Principals Kristin Reynolds of Fort Banks, Larry O'Leary of Arthur T. Cummings Elementary, Brian Curley of Winthrop Middle School, and Sean Crombie of Winthrop High School presented jointly Monday, with Crombie reporting that high school students scored approximately 10 percentage points above the state average in meeting-or-exceeding expectations on MCAS in ELA, math, and science, and achieved a 100 percent participation rate across all three tests for what he said was the first time. Curley reported middle school students ranked between the 63rd and 79th percentile statewide, calling it "by far the best we've ever scored." The committee approved two financial warrants totaling $1,283,137.98 — SVW 25-14 for $363,138.29 and SPW 25-15 for $919,999.69 — and accepted the hire of Kristin Gazillion as an ESP at Arthur T. Cummings Elementary School. Principals tied continued progress to the outcome of the FY2026 budget, as a citizens committee organizing in support of a proposed override held its first community meetings.
